SWALLOWING

Imagine not being able to chew and swallow the foods and drink that you love? Imagine being fearful of swallowing?

Dysphagia is the technical term given to people who can’t swallow or have a disordered swallow. Dysphagia is a serious medical condition that requires treatment from a speech pathologist. The reason why it’s so important to be treated is that a disordered swallow can lead to serious health implications such as aspiration pneumonia and or choking.

At Early Start Speech Pathology swallowing is assessed using a variety of techniques, including the use of thickened fluids and different textures. The speech pathologist will examine the client’s swallow and make recommendations regarding the safest texture and fluid level for the client. Early Start’s Speech Pathologist will work closely with the client’s family, medical and allied health team to ensure the best outcome for the client. Tailored meal plans can be created to ensure the safety of clients.
